artist statement

With this video, I wanted to show the process of living with a disease through the process of a road trip. The constant flow of traffic and scenery directly relate to the constant journey of a disease. The car represents my physical body. Before a trip, a car must be serviced and checked in order for the car to work properly. Medication must be prescribed and blood work must be updated in order for someone with a disease to stay healthy. The levels of the gas and speed relate to hormonal and chemical levels in the body. The video continues traveling down the road, revealing that my disease will never leave, nor will the effects.

I view my daily process of dealing with this disease like traveling in a car.

Checking the engine/starting the car= starting medication/treatment

roads passing by= the continuous journey through the ups and downs of the disease

The Medium Is the Message

I am painting a picture. As artist, I have been trained to think that the picture's content is the message of the piece. In this particular text, it began by saying "Many people would be disposed to say that it was not the machine, but what one did with the machine, that was the meaning or message". Throughout the text, I realized that mediums do not only have to be apart of the process of ones piece, but can also be the product.
"The message of any medium or technology is the change of scale or pace or pattern that introduces it into human affairs". It is more important to acknowledge how the medium affects humans than it is to acknowledge what the medium creates. What the medium is being used for is a "matter of indifference". General Sarnoff made a statement: "We are too prone to make technological instruments the scapegoats for the sins of those who wield them. The products of modern science are not in themselves good or bad; it is the way they are used that determines their value". What I realized in reading this text is that any technology can do anything except "add itself on to what we already are". Machines cannot become apart of us, however they can be used as an outlet to who people really are.
When looked at socially, culture has assigned jobs for humans, roles that separate and ranks people based on success and efficiency. If roles instead of jobs were assigned, people would exist as they are, not as what society wants them to be.
"Today when we want to get our bearings in our own culture, and have a need to stand aside from the bias and pressure exerted by any chemical form of human expression, we have only to visit a society where that particular form has not been felt, or a historical period where it is unknown".

response to project

I am still formulating the artist statment I wish to pair with my piece. It could either reflect what I intended, my initial reaction and response to the sweat shop industry, or my statement could be about a deeper internal struggle I have created within myself. It is still processing in my mind.

Artist Statement: Phasing Loop

This piece is meant to alert the audience of the ignorance of consumers. I wanted to stress the words shop and sale in order for the audience to feel a connection to this type of purchase and the emotions involved. Anyone would relate to the joy of an inexpensive purchase or savvy find.
Although we relate to this positive feeling, one can't help but notice the irritating repetitiveness and dissatisfaction these shallow words bring. Also the constant pulsing of the sewing machine begins to introduce the feeling of machinery and labor.
The panting voice at the end of the clip is presented in order to draw the viewer into a mindset of physical strain. The result of this strain, sweat.
The combination of the young female's shopping, the sewing machine, and the gasping breath serves as a audio representation of our connection as consumers to the workers creating our clothing.
